This is part of my visit to the 45th Infantry Division Museum while I was in Oklahoma this week. It’s one of the largest collections of military vehicles from WWI through Korea. Today’s vehicle is special to me as my grandfather drove an ambulance while stationed in the Pacific. Although he had several operating assignments while in the military, we think this is what he drove most often.

The model at the museum is an M43, built by Dodge as a follow-up to the WC54. The M43 didn’t see service until Korea, so my grandfather never had a chance to drive this version. The M43 is a 3/4 ton 4x4 with a long-stroke straight six making all of 78 hp. It is said that they had connecting rod problems due to the long stroke and low gearing. The rods failed due to the engines being over-revved.

The WC54 seen below (thanks, Wikipedia) is probably what my grandfather drove. I need to track one down to get a few pics of my own.
